Summary

A custom web application that allows educators to organize writing assignments and gives students an interactive way to discover and select creative writing prompts.

The problem

An educator wanted a more engaging way to introduce creative writing assignments while giving students greater ownership over their work. The initial prompt distribution tool offered limited interaction and made it difficult to manage student selections across multiple classes and units.

What I built

  • Teacher Dashboard: A centralized interface for creating classes, organizing literary units, and managing writing prompts.
  • Interactive Prompt Exchange: A student-facing experience where students can explore available prompts, contribute their own, and make selections. Once selected, prompts are removed from the available pool to prevent duplicate assignments.
  • Privacy by design: Students are identified only by assignment IDs the teacher creates, so no personal or school-record information is stored in the app, and nothing that could identify a student exists outside the teacher’s view.

The teacher dashboard: open or close submissions and selection, and watch student progress live.
Student view after joining an activity, showing the student's contributed phrase and the writing prompt they claimed from a classmate
The student view: contribute an idea, then claim a classmate’s prompt as your own.

The result

  • Used across all 6 of the educator’s English literature courses, with 20 units and 140+ students so far.
  • Delivered a functional application supporting multiple classes, literary units, and student-generated writing prompts.
  • Simplified assignment organization through a centralized teacher dashboard and automated prompt selection management.
  • Deployed the application for use by an educator and her students, with a separate demonstration version developed for educator training before introducing it to students.
